How many moving totes do I need?

The number of moving totes you need depends on the size of your home, how much you own, and how much you plan to pack yourself versus move loose (like furniture and large items). As a starting point, most people need roughly one tote for every 8–12 square feet of densely packed belongings.

Here’s a quick guide: a studio or dorm typically needs about 10 totes; a one-bedroom around 20; a two-bedroom around 35; a three-bedroom around 50; and a larger home 75 or more. If you have a lot of books, kitchenware, or a home office, size up — those rooms fill totes fast.

Reusable totes have a consistent size, which makes estimating easier than with mismatched cardboard boxes. They also stack neatly, so you can fit more into each car or truck load. If you’re between sizes, it’s usually better to have a few extra totes than to run short mid-pack.
